The first round of the year on Heathlands this year was played by the distinguished trio of Steve Boss, Gary Boulanger and Terry Smith. Welcome back, guys. We couldn’t think of a better group to open Healthlands.
Anyone familiar with thoroughbred horse racing already knows who Gary is. Originally from Edmonton, this record-breaking jockey has raced across North America collecting over 3000 career wins. He is best known for winning the 2001 Queen’s Plate aboard Dancethruthedawn. As a long time supporter and fan of OVG, it was no surprise to see Gary among our first group on Heathlands. We caught up with him (a real feat!) warming up on the range to welcome him back.
Golf is Gary’s other passion and he is effusive in his praise of Osprey Valley Golf, “The greatest courses we have. Three great courses, all different. You have a lot of choice. If you want a really challenging game, you play Heathlands, but Hoot or Toot from the back tees are a tough test also. You have to hit good shots. If you’re not hitting the ball good, you’re going to pay.”
Ask which is his favourite course, though, and there is a clear preference for Heathlands. “Oh, for sure. For sure. Heathlands is …” He smiles and you get a little glimpse of the competitive spirit that helped make Gary so successful, “... you better hit it really well. If you’re off the fairway, you’re dead …” He trails off with a knowing laugh.
